Flying Geese Quilt

So I started cutting for this quilt about a year and a half ago when I was back home in India. The pink and the orange fabric is from a fabric market I used to frequent in Bangalore. it's great fabric - lovely weave and about 60" wide. And if I think of what I paid for it... sigh.

Anyway... brought the pieces I cut and the fabric across the world with me last year and finally bought a nice Kona Coal to go with it. The pattern has been in my book for a while now.

One of things I learned to do during my Machine Quilting class was squaring and trimming blocks. Now I don't make blocks without this step!
Does'nt the block on top look way better than the block below? More work but better results.

Any tips on how to reduce bulk when doing flying geese/ HSTs? And how to improve accuracy?

Finished block. Squared to 12" square.

  1. I think your block looks great! My best way to reduce bulk is using the Accuquilt GO! Baby to cut the flying geese. That way the little corners are squared off and it reduces bulk. Thanks for sharing your block. I love the colors and I just got a bolt of Kona Grey this weekend. Loved your block so much I had to Pin it. Consider yourself Pinned! Thanks!

  5. What a great use of flying geese!! Very creative and I love the hot pink and orange together! Once I learned to make blocks a little big and then trim to size, my quilts got a whole lot better (and more fun to sew!!) Thanks for sharing :)

  8. Beautiful block and I loved hearing how you scored the fabric!

Accurate cutting and pressing seams open helps me with "bulky" blocks!

  10. Pretty quilt block! Planning ahead which way to press seams helps and if there's a lot of seams coming together in one place, press seams open.
